about

Daf is one of the oldest musical instruments of the Middle East and Mesopotamia. Daf performers in white dresses wandering among villages with dafs on their shoulders are still raved over. For centuries, daf has perished dhkirs and jems in the hands of dervishes, and the gates of sacred places have been cracked with its sound. Daf plays along with the traditional folk dance “halay” in wedding ceremonies and festivals. Daf is the guest of divans and gatherings, and played in company with epics and tales in winter nights. People gather to bid farewell to dead with the sound of daf and elegies flow into its sound. Daf is resembled to the face of the beloved and the heart of lovers, and the heart groans with the pain of love like a daf. In a word, daf represents the life; each ring is an expression of hope, strength, belief and love.

about

Def û Deng Istanbul, Turkey

As Def û Deng, we wanted to be a part of this story of centuries based on all these emotions created by daf and gathered together to work on the performance possibilities of daf, and its harmony with other instruments. We hope this journey will be as long as the life of daf, strong as its sound, and generous as its rings…
